Stem Cell Treatment for ONH-SOD

Since 2007, Beike’s stem cells were used to treat different types of visual impairments, such as Optic Nerve Hypoplasia & Septo-Optic Dysplasia.

ONH is a congenital developmental disorder in which optic nerves have failed to develop properly. Some patients also show abnormalities of the central brain structures (such as an absence of septum pellucidum and corpus callosum) and hormonal problems. Collectively along with ONH, these are termed as SOD.

The aim of our treatment is to regenerate the patient’s optic nerve and other affected brain structures by using stem cell transplantation. To do so, the stem cells are injected by IV, lumbar puncture and/or retrobulbar injection depending on each patient’s personal condition. This unique combination allows for better targeting of the affected areas.

Our stem cell therapy for Optic Nerve Hypoplasia and Septo-Optic Dysplasia can potentially bring improvements in visual acuity, light perception, vision field (Scotoma), color vision, night vision, nystagmus, strabismus, hormonal deficiencies and autistic symptoms.*
Upon receiving your medical information our doctors can give you additional guidance regarding you/your relative’s particular condition.

*As with any stem cell therapy, improvements may vary from patient to patient and cannot be guaranteed.

Injection Methods

The medical team at the center uses a combination of three injection methods for our patients diagnosed with ONH/SOD. More information below:

Intravenous Injection (IV)

The Intravenous (IV) delivery method is a very simple process and should already be familiar to most patients. A tubing line with a catheter tip threaded over a needle is placed into the patient’s vein. Once proper placement is obtained, the needle portion is removed and the flexible plastic catheter is left in place in the vein with the tubing attached. The stem cell solution mixed with the cord blood serum will be administered through the IV (after the evaluation by local medical staff, Dexamethasone may be considered beforehand to avoid any potential allergic reactions). Typically no sedation is required for this procedure. The entire IV injection process takes less than 45 minutes to complete.

Lumbar Puncture (LP)

A lumbar puncture is also commonly referred to as a spinal tap. It is a procedure used to access the cerebrospinal fluid of the brain and spinal cord and helps to deliver stem cells directly into the cerebral spinal fluid, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. Our doctors have determined that this is the least invasive method for delivering stem cells directly into the central nervous system. Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) is used by the body to provide protection for the brain and spinal cord, limiting the possibility of injury to these areas. The body constantly produces CSF and thus any withdrawn fluid is naturally replaced within a few hours.

Retrobulbar Injection (RBI)

This type of injection is considered for patients with visual impairments diagnosed with retinal and/or optic nerve related conditions. The procedure allows the application of stem cells in the retrobulbar area behind the eye, placing the cells as close as possible from the optic nerve, retina and other important tissues of the eyes. The procedure takes only few seconds to complete and is not painful. Patients having retrobulbar injections usually notice better improvements.

Patient Testimonials

Below are video interviews recorded during treatment with Beike stem cells. These families are talking about their experience including the improvements they have notices following the treatment. The improvements mentioned in these videos are typical in patients with ONH/SOD, however it does not guarantee that all patients may have improvement.
